Commandment #1

Two observations from today's sermon about the 1st commandment...

#1 - Commandment #1 declares the singular and exclusive nature of God's existence.

#2 - Commandment #1 prohibits the accumulation of rivals or competitors even if they are false.

Idolatry is so pervasive in our culture. We have replaced the one true and living God with all kinds of false gods to whom we look for security, peace, comfort, and salvation.

Idolatry is not something that affects "all those pagans" out there. We are susceptible to the pull of idolatry as Christians--maybe even more so because of our pride and self-righteousness as we "think" we are better than them.

See, the temptation toward idolatry is so subtle.

Only by God's grace and the enabling power of the Holy Spirit are we able to detect what our idols are and remove them.

What are your idols? What are my idols?

  1. Great subject to cover,
Our modern idols are more wicked than the ones of the old or new testament times. They at least worshipped something they believed had a higher power upon which they could call. The 21st century American idols are all about self worship thru greed, jealousy, self-indulgence, selfishness, pleasure, addictions, pride, arrogance, injustice, hate, anger. Our outward signs for these indulgences are money, controlling power, laziness, drugs used for pleasure, alcohol, abusive speech, exploiting the weak among us. Make no mistake about it these are spiritual issues not just secular differences. The world has become more wicked now because we have elevated ourselves up as worthy of worship. They at the very least pretended to worship something higher than themselves. For many in today's world they have cast off any notion of God being in control.
    All for Christ,
    Dan O.
